Calendar of Events 2008

August

Last day – August 1, 2008

MAIN GALLERY
The  Return of the Yellow Peril:
A Survey of the Work of Roger Shimomura 1967– 2007

Painter, printmaker and performance artist Roger Shimomura was a distinguished professor of art at KU for 35 years before he retired in 2004. His vividly colored canvases integrate Japanese woodblock prints and Pop Art style, unforgettably illustrating racism, stereotyping, and the pain that prejudice causes.

A Program of Exhibits USA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance with the Missouri Arts Council and The National Endowment for the Arts.

Sponsored by
the Commerce Bancshares Foundation and the William T. Kemper
Foundation

Through August 15, 2008

REGIONAL GALLERY
Nuts and Bolts of Art
This exhibition reinvents the idea of quilting and apparel as domestic, comfortable and comforting arts. Small format art quilts incorporate fabric and found metal objects; the remarkable, intricately woven garments of Kansas City artist Ny Wetmore are constructed entirely of wire.

August 23 – October 24, 2008

MAIN GALLERY
Midwestern Sensibilities:
A Retrospective of Original Prints
by Robert W. Addison

Addison’s beautifully rendered Midwestern scenes seem familiar, even reminiscent of Joplin. To be shown with an interactive display of the printmaker’s silkscreens, illustrating the artist’s meticulous process, first screen to last.

REGIONAL GALLERY
Craig Calnan: Drawing on Experience
The complex, rhythmic structures of Calnan’s small scale compositions lead viewers past surface into stories based in art history, science fiction, or even fantasy.
