Spiva Classes

Spiva provides a broad spectrum of creative, educational art programs for the four-state community and encourages all age groups to explore, enjoy and participate in the arts. Spiva’s educational programs take place in our galleries, in the classrooms and sometimes in the streets!

To secure a spot in any of our classes, registration and payment must be made. Download our Class Registration Form here and mail/fax to Spiva or you may register over the phone (417.623.0183) or in person. Online registration is in the works...

Educational and Youth Programs

Education is a major component of our mission statement at Spiva. Our children's program presents opportunities for creative experience for youth of all ages.

Young Artists Studio

Our core program for children grades K through 9 explores the methods and techniques used by the artists who are exhibiting in our main gallery.

Programs For Teens

Teens work with a professional artist to develop art for the community. Learning the design process in five week programs, participants analyze, design, and implement a project. Past projects include a mural on a local bridge and a graphic design project for the Northpark Mall's twenty-fifth anniversary. We work tirelessly in building new and exciting summer and after school programs for our community kids.

Creation Station

Drop in Tuesday afternoons and experiment with a variety of media: painting, drawing, clay, watercolor, acrylic, sculpture, collage, photography, and printmaking. Explore the galleries with scavenger hunts and other activities! Please preregister.

In conjunction with Spiva’s national photography competition, the PhotoSpiva Kids exhibit features the work of very young photographers. Students learn basic photography techniques to start them on their photo journeys. Each child uses one of Spiva’s digital cameras,and two images for each student will be selected, framed and displayed in the Upstairs Gallery during March 2015. Local glass artist Jane McCaulley is back with a brand new project! Come learn how to cut glass, thendesign a beautiful 5" x 10" tray, just perfect for hors d'oeuvres or as a lovely centerpiece. Students will receive their finished fused glass tray one week later.

In celebration of the Joplin Recycling Center’s 15th Anniversary, we are offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to rummage through Spiva’s vast collection of recycled treasures. Participants will spend time with local artist Tricia Courtney exploring found items as a medium for art. The fun begins as you use our items to create your own artistic masterpiece.  Then enter your artwork, March26-28, into the Trash-to-Art contest and Exhibit sponsored by Post Memorial Art Reference Library, Joplin Recycling Center, and Connect2Culture.
